“A cane rod is hidden inside the culm of bamboo. The rod maker’s task is to bring it out.”

Carboni-handplaned bamboo rods are meticulously made with the finest care and materials.  The process includes splitting the bamboo into 1/4" strips for tips and 3/8" strips for the butts.  Then the strips are hand planed to 60 degree angles. The 6 strips are bound together and ammonia treated for two days.  Next, they are heat treated to get the desired color.  Then the bamboo is planed to the desired taper.  Now the 6 strips are glued together, then , when dry, the sections are scraped and sanded to remove excess glue.  The rods receive 3 coats of varnish, sanding in between each.  Next the ferrules, reel seat and cork handle are installed prior to wrapping the guides and ferrules. Then the final varnish --a fourth coat--is applied to seal all the wraps.  These are very, very brief steps in bamboo rod making. Most rods take up to 100 hours to complete.  Pete Carboni has been building and restoring rods for over 40 years.
